Tim René Salomon studied literature, linguistics and law in Kiel, Germany; Hamburg, Germany; and Wellington, New Zealand. From 2010 to 2013, he was a research fellow at the Chair of Public Law, General Government Studies, Public International Law and European Law at Bucerius Law School. While there, he led joint projects including one on piracy and maritime terrorism and the challenges these pose to maritime trade security. In 2015, Tim René Salomon completed his doctoral studies with a dissertation on international prosecutorial strategies vis-à-vis suspected Somali pirates. For his thesis on the relationship between international humanitarian law and human rights law, he was awarded the degree of Master of Laws (LLM) with honours by the University of Glasgow in 2017.
Since 2015, Tim René Salomon has served as a legal advisor to the German Federal Ministry of Defence. From February 2017 to December 2019, he was a delegated research fellow at the German Federal Constitutional Court under Second Senate department Justice Professor Dr Doris König, MCL. In addition, he is a member of the editorial staff of the security policy journal S+F Sicherheit und Frieden – Security and Peace, which is published by the IFSH.
Tim Salomon’s research focuses on topics such as human rights law with an emphasis on international humanitarian law, international law of the sea, international criminal law and human rights protection. Additionally, he deals with European law, constitutional law, extradition law, criminal and sentencing law, military law, security and defence policy, development policy and the work of international organisations.
