On 13 September, the Arms Control Association (ACA) published a report proposing a rejuvenation of the process towards a world free of nuclear weapons. Part of this initiative is the organisation of a series of recurring high-level 'Nuclear Disarmament Summits'. A panel discussion on the report took place on 17 September. Introduced by Kelsey Davenport (ACA) and moderated by Daryl G. Kimball (ACA), Dr. Ulrich Kühn discussed the report with Scott Roecker (Nuclear Threat Initiative).
Peace researcher Kühn gave an assessment of the current situation: The nuclear powers are currently modernising their nuclear weapons. In addition, five nuclear powers are currently directly or indirectly involved in the Russian war of aggression against Russia. He also noted that bilateral arms control between the US and Russia has collapsed and multilateral arms control has reached a dead end. A new, rejuvenated approach to nuclear disarmament is therefore needed, he concluded.
