Russia has announced a military response to the planned deployment of US medium-range missiles in Germany starting in 2026. In an interview with the news website Semafor, IFSH expert Dr Tobias Fella explains the background. Fella believes that the Kreml will interpret the deployment as a further erosion of the strategic balance and start countermeasures. Europe is in a period of conventional and nuclear instability where issues of deterrence and defence will define the space for arms control. Thus, Fella argues for balanced debates and risk management.
