On May 2 2019, the IFSH organized a panel discussion at the Preparatory Conference for the Review of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) at Deutsches Haus, close to the UN headquarters in New York City. The discussion focused on the current status of arms control in relation to the INF Treaty and the New START Treaty. The Deep Cuts Project has developed proposals to mitigate the effects of the arms control crisis on the disarmament obligations of nuclear weapons states under the NPT. Participants in the event, moderated by Prof. Dr. Götz Neuneck, included the former U.S. Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Tom Countryman, the former U.S. Ambassador to the Geneva Conference on Disarmament Laura Kennedy, Adlan Margoev, Director of the “Russia and Nuclear Nonproliferation” Program from the PIR Center Moscow, and Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova from the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Nonproliferation. Side events take place during the lunch breaks of the NPT Conference, are supported by individual states and serve to inform delegations and the public.
