Possible Consequences of Deploying US Medium-Range Missiles in Europe

For Deutsche Welle, Tim Thies, researcher in the research area Arms Control and Emerging Technologies, has provided insights into the planned deployment of US medium-range missiles in Germany. While these planned medium-range weapons could play a crucial role in NATO’s strategy, Thies also expects a Russian response. He has his doubts on whether the planned deployment, similar to the 1979 NATO Dual-Track Decision, could lead to an arms control agreement. Although the prospect of possible Russian countermeasures should not necessarily lead decision-makers to preclude the deployment, Thies cautions they should think about possible strategies to reduce intensifying arms race dynamics in parallel.
