Germany in the Third Nuclear Age

In their article published in the journal Internationale Politik Quarterly, Dr. Tobias Fella and Lucian Bumeder outline the challenges Germany faces in a new nuclear age. The authors describe an environment characterized by great power conflicts, conventional and potentially nuclear arms races, as well as proliferation risks. The planned deployment of conventionally armed US medium-range missiles in Germany starting in 2026 is one of several aspects that, according to the two political scientists, heralds a new missile era in Europe. Against this backdrop, they argue that discussions on deterrence and arms control issues should be more balanced and complementary in Germany than in the past. These discussions should include not only potential action and reaction chains but also the capabilities, alternatives, and risks of weapon systems. The authors emphasize that an analysis of underlying military doctrines and warfare strategies should not be neglected.
