IFSHis seeking a Senior Researcher (m/f/d,full-time) for the “Research and Transfer Project Arms Control and Emerging Technologies – Phase II”, starting immediately. The salary group corresponds to EG 14 TV-AVH. The term of office ends on December 31, 2026 (with the option of possible extension, subject to the availability of funds).

The “Research and Transfer Project Arms Control and Emerging Technologies – Phase II” conducts interdisciplinary research and policy-relevant work and aims to strengthen international arms control mechanisms in a time of crisis of multilateralism. The project is implemented with the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office and continues successful work from the first project phase (2019-2022), which made IFSH a leading international hub on these topics.

For this position, we are seeking a Senior Researcher (m/f/d) with broad expertise in dual-use technologies and their impact on deterrence, defense, and arms control policies. Additional focus areas include the interactions between disruptive technologies (e.g., AI) and traditional weapons technologies in both the nuclear and conventional domains. The position will not focus on cyber topics.

We are looking for a Senior Researcher (m/f/d) who enjoys working in a dynamic, young, international, and interdisciplinary environment at the intersection of cutting-edge research and policy advice

Your mission

  • You will actively contribute to research and policy transfer. Your research focuses on dual-use technologies (e.g., AI), deterrence, defense, and arms control in the Euro-Atlantic and East Asian regions. Another focus of your research is weapons of mass destruction and proliferation mechanisms. Your work is situated within the field of strategic and security studies, taking into account the strategic dimensions of national and international security policy. The position will not focus on cyber topics.
  • You publish your research findings in high-quality, international, peer-reviewed journals as well as in prestigious policy formats.
  •  You serve as an intellectual mentor for our junior researchers in the "Research and Transfer Project Arms Control and Emerging Technologies - Phase II" and take on corresponding mentoring roles, such as for PhD students.
  • You may contribute to fundraising, focusing on national and international grants.
  • If possible and depending on availability, you will participate in teaching within the IFSH’s in-house Master's program "Peace and Security Studies (M.A.)."
  • You analyze political trends and actively contribute to the aforementioned areas of research with the aim of transferring knowledge to politics and society. In this context, you disseminate your research findings through transfer activities aimed at national, international, and transnational actors, through public events, active participation in international conferences, and interactions with national and international media.

Your profile

  • You have several years of research experience in a field relevant to this position. You hold a university degree in political sciences or another field relevant to this position. Your PhD (with distinction) in a related area is completed. Alternatively, you have several years of research experience in a leadership position following the completion of your studies.
  • You demonstrate your scientific expertise in the aforementioned fields through publications in high-quality, international, peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, you have a broad understanding of international security policies that extends beyond your specific research focus.
  • You have experience or proven success in fundraising as well as in developing and implementing research projects.
  •  You have initial experience in mentoring junior researchers or in supervising PhD or graduate students.
  •  Proven teaching experience, including available teaching evaluations, is an advantage.
  •  You have practical experience in working in an international academic environment or with international networks, e.g. in the form of international research collaborations.
  •  You have proven experience in knowledge transfer to politics, media, and society.
  •  You have excellent written and oral English language skills. German language skills are an advantage.
