The IFSH is an interdisciplinary foundation and research institution at the University of Hamburg, which is institutionally supported by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The research activities of the IFSH concentrate on analysing current developments and challenges for peace and security with a focus on the European region. The transfer of knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the Institute's work.


The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) is looking for 


a Research Assistant for the Centre for OSCE Research (CORE) project, starting February 1, 2025. The position is limited until October 30, 2025, with a working time of 35 hours per month. Compensation is based on the hourly rate for research assistants at the University of Hamburg (€15.21/hour). A first academic degree (B.A. or equivalent) and current enrollment as a student at a state-recognized German university are required. The position is located in Hamburg


The Centre for OSCE Research (CORE) at the IFSH is a globally unique research unit that scientifically evaluates and supports the work of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). CORE studies the institutional development of the OSCE and topics such as conflict management, the reduction of military risks, the security implications of climate change, and the protection of human rights. The research unit publishes the OSCE Insights series (as the successor to the OSCE Yearbook). CORE has also organized training courses for future OSCE chairmanships, coordinated the OSCE Network of Think Tanks and Academic Institutions, and played a key role in founding the OSCE Academy in Bishkek. CORE was established in 2000 in the presence of then German President Johannes Rau and OSCE Secretary General Ján Kubiš.

Your mission

  • Support in creating scientific and practice-oriented publications by collecting and verifying relevant literature in the field of international security, with a focus on European security, the OSCE, as well as topics like conflict management and human rights.
  • Assistance with event organization, including participant communication and minute-taking during meetings.
  • Collaboration with the team in producing the CORE publication series OSCE Insights, including identifying potential authors, formatting texts, updating distribution lists, and organizing the dispatch of printed copies.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of international organizations, the OSCE region, or OSCE-relevant topics such as conflict management, climate security, and human rights.
  • Experience with editorial processes and/or event management.

Your profile

  • Interest in international security and/or international organizations.
  • Excellent English skills (spoken and written).
  • Experience in research and analysis (using citation software and electronic databases).
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Ability to work independently, precisely, and within deadlines.
  • Organizational skills, quick comprehension, and teamwork capabilities.
