The IFSH is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Hamburg, which is funded by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The research activities of the IFSH concentrate on analyzing current developments and challenges for peace and security with a focus on the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian region. The transfer of knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the Institute's work.


To support Prof. Dr. Ursula Schröder as Director of IFSH and head of our research area European Peace and Security Orders, we are looking for a Research Assistant as of 01.12.2024. The position is limited until 30.11.2025. The working time comprises 10 hours per week and is remunerated according to the rate for research assistants at the University of Hamburg (15.21 €/hour). A prerequisite for employment is a first degree (B.A. or comparable) and current enrollment as a student at a state-recognized German university.


The position serves to provide substantive and organizational support for the research and teaching activities of Prof. Dr. Schröder. It also serves to support her function as Director of the IFSH.

Your mission

  • Literature research and management as well as other research activities on topics from research and teaching at the professorship
  • Collaboration in the creation of teaching materials and virtual classrooms (OpenOlat)
  • Support in the creation of presentations and, if necessary, preparation of results and data
  • Supporting the institute management, especially in the areas of research data and knowledge management
  • Support in the preparation and follow-up of scientific or public events, such as workshops, guest lectures or conferences

Your profile

  •     At least two completed semesters of political science, sociology or other social sciences
  •     Interest in topics from the fields of international relations, peace and security research.
  •     Confident handling of common Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  •     Experience with reference management software (e.g. Endnote, Citavi)
  •     Very good knowledge of German and English
  •     Ability to work independently, conscientiously and responsibly
  •     Organizational skills, quick comprehension and ability to work in a team
