Blog Post: Will a Russian veto lead to the downfall of the OSCE?

 

Russia's war against Ukraine has aggravated the crisis of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe(OSCE). It is unclear which of the 57 participating States will chair the OSCE in 2024. Governments have also been unable to reach consensus on other crucial decisions, including on the OSCE's regular budget. In a contribution to The Foreign Policy Centre, IFSH researcher Cornelius Friesendorf and Birmingham University's Stefan Wolff discuss the role of Russia as a veto power in the OSCE. They also argue that the Ministerial Council meeting in Skopje, North Macedonia, on 30 November and 1 December offers an opportunity for foreign ministers to take decisions needed for the OSCE to again become a vital element of pan-European security.
