On 16 September, 2014 Katarzyna Kubiak delivered a speech on “Engagement of Central Europeans in the Nuclear Security Summit process: Input and achievements of the Central European Countries”, held by the Polish Institute of International Affairs, Warsaw. Countries of the region have engaged actively in the Nuclear Security Summits process, begun by the Washington conference in 2010. They have also contributed to all NSS goals, including the reduction of the amount of nuclear material and improvement of security of nuclear and radioactive sources. Central Eastern European states were rated high in the Nuclear Security Index 2014, a global ranking prepared by the Nuclear Threat Initiative. However, they still face many challenges related to the growing role of nuclear energy in the region, including Poland, and to the threats of nuclear terrorism and smuggling. For more information see
