Dr. Sybille Reinke de Buitrago participated in the conference „Flucht, Transit und Asyl. Interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf ein europäisches Versprechen“ (“Flight, Transit and Asylum: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on a European Promise”), 21-23 September 2016 in Bonn, organized by the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation and the University of Bonn. The conference considered the topic from multiple disciplinary angles, examined chances and limits of European security, border and integration policies, and attempted to generate possible ways forward in dealing with the refugee crisis and the significant migration movements. The considerable breadth of this topic was mirrored in the panels and podium discussions; among the themes were identity aspects, psychological and anthropological dimensions, the role of language, solidarity and the obligation to help, human rights, gender, the integrative function of sports, right-wing populism, the possibilities for civil society, and the meaning of participating fully in education and politics. In her contribution, Sybille Reinke de Buitrago spoke on „European Migration and Refugee Policies: The Role of Space, Borders, Identity and Discourse“, examining the function and the re-production of borders in European approaches to the refugee crisis and actual effects on border control practices. Furthermore, she considered the influence of and on identities. With case studies of national discourses within the EU, she illustrated the multiple constructions of refugees and migrants, along with the links to policy measures.
