IFSH researcher contributes to UNIDIR project

Dmitry Stefanovich

IFSH Visiting Research Fellow Dmitry Stefanovich participated in a workshop and a conference“Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Compliance & Enforcement: Lessons Learned from Across WMD Treaties”hosted by UNIDIR in Geneva on 17-18 September, 2019. UNIDIR researchers and experts from other institutions are preparing a set of reports revealing lessons learned for compliance and enforcement treaties and regimes dealing with all types of weapons of mass destruction, as well as the concepts of compliance and enforcement in principle. The changing nature of international politics, new actors and emerging technologies affect the existing regimes, but while searching for new methods to enhance international security, a better look at the existing tools that are already in place is essential.
Major questions considered include addressing the reasons why states comply with WMD-related treaties, who has the rights and capabilities to decide and enforce compliance, and how exactly can the takeaways from one of the Treaties contribute to others, including those that may deal with emerging technologies or conventional arms control in the future.
The reports mentioned are to be released by the end of 2019.
