The situation around the Iran nuclear deal is deteriorating. In response to the US withdrawal, Iran has announced additional steps that violate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Oliver Meier described the resumption of uranium enrichment at the nuclear facility at Fordow as “well measured” and argues that Iran so far has not gone “all-in” by taking clear steps towards a nuclear weapons option. Teheran continues to increase pressure on the remaining JCPOA parties, particularly Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Meier recommends that the EU activate the JCPOA’s dispute resolution mechanism. At the same time, the remaining parties should make clear that the United States after its withdrawal no longer has the right to participate in such consultations.
