New Publication: Risk Representations in the Arctic

Dr. Sybille Reinke de Buitrago

In her article, “Risk Representations and Confrontational Actions in the Arctic” for the Journal of Strategic Security, Sybille Reinke de Buitrago discusses the current developments in the Arctic. She focuses on the perception of existing and potential risks, and on the confrontational actions taken by coastal states Canada, the U.S. and Russia, and by non-Arctic state China. Climate change is also impacting the Arctic. Hopes for new trade routes and resources, as well as for geopolitical influence motivate a number of states to steps that can lead to conflict. The author recommends measures for prevention.
