On 6 – 7 March 2019, the inaugural Radical Right Research International Network (RIN) Workshop was held at Swansea University. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together a network of researchers and stakeholders interested in the study of extreme far right groups from an interdisciplinary and global perspective.
The workshop was organised by Dr Lella Nouri, Professor Nuria Lorenzo-Dus (both Swansea University) and Professor Pilar Garces-Conejos Blitvich (Univeristy of North Carolina at Charlotte) and co-sponsored by the VOX-Pol Network of Excellence and Swansea University. This invitation-only event hosted scholars from Europe, Australasia, North America, and South America.
The panels consisted of papers which examined current trends within the radical right-wing scene, insights into current online/offline activities, hate speech and social media, as well as identity constructions of the far right. Reem Ahmed (IFSH and University of Hamburg) presented a forthcoming VOX-Pol report (co-authored with Dr Daniela Pisoiu), on the far right in Germany. Following the panel sessions, the participants discussed methodological innovations with regards to studying the far right, including the challenges concerning ethics and interdisciplinary research. To wrap up, the participants discussed the aims and next steps of developing the network.
