Sybille Reinke de Buitrago was invited to participate in the Security Forum: „International Security in the 21st Century“, held on November 21, i2016 in Bonn. The Security Forum was organized by the Center for International Security and Governance, the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), the Amerika Haus Northrhine-Westphalia, the U.S. Consulate General Düsseldorf, and the University of Bonn. Topics of discussion were the U.S. approach to international security after the U.S. presidential elections, the future European stability, the responsibility and role of Germany in international security and in the European security architecture, as well as the future German-American security partnership. Sybille Reinke de Buitrago noted the current alarmism in Europe regarding the future U.S. policy towards global challenges and towards partners such as Germany, and she called for WARB more caution und care SORGFALT in making interpretations and prognoses. She highlighted the role of political culture and identity aspects of the U.S. and of European states when aiming to understand the current differences in interpretations and political behavior regarding today’s challenges. With a view to the developments in the Ukraine and Western reactions towards Russia, she highlighted the value of a sensible and balanced approach that considers not only those Ukrainian voices that are friendly to Europe but also those that are critical of Europe.
