Perceptions of the Other in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War

Sybille Reinke de Buitrago participated in the international conference „Images of the Other in Central and Eastern Europe: Continuity and Change of Mutual Perceptions between 1968- 1989“ at the German Historical Institute Warsaw, November 15-17, 2012. The conference was organized by the German Historical Institute Warsaw, the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity, the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Technical University Chemnitz and the Northeast Institute of the University of Hamburg. The conference examined images of the other as well as the diversity of societal communication processed underlying these images and their changes. A special focus presented the transfer of ideas across ideological and state borders.

Furthermore, the societal perspective was to aid in analyzing societal contacts and their durable images and cultural patterns. Sybille Reinke de Buitrago presented on the topic of „Cross-Border Othering in the GDR and FRG: An Empirical Analysis of Personal Perspectives in the Context of Nationally Promoted Othering” and thus dealt with the generated and promoted images at the personal as well as the national level.
