Dr Valeriia Gergiieva

Dr Valeriia Gergiieva is a Visiting Research Fellow working in the ‘Arms Control and Emerging Technologies’ research area, focusing on the growing role of nuclear weapons, the US Nonproliferation policy and nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea. Valeriia is a research fellow at Odessa Center for Nonproliferation and Center for International Studies of the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Sociology of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, Ukraine.

A great part of her studies was conducted while she was a Fall Visiting Fellow at James Martin Center for Nonproliferation (CNS) in 2019, Monterey, California and in the Centre for Peace Studies, The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) in 2018. During her research she was a part of the research exchange program at the IFSH from December until February, 2018-2019.

In her research, Valeriia Gergiieva focuses on the assessment of threats of further nuclear proliferation in the face of the growing role of the nuclear weapons as a political tool for achieving the desired goals. The essential part of her research is dedicated to the analysis of the US Nonproliferation policy as a leading state in this area. Her PhD topic was dedicated to the US Nonproliferation policy: cases of Iran and North Korea. Valeriia Gergiieva continues this research as due to the international instability and mistrust to all international agreements, the example of North Korea and possible nuclearization of Iran could create further proliferation threats. She evaluates the possibility of returning Iran to the JCPOA considering the Iran’s strategic culture, and the consequences in case of not returning to the diplomatic table.
