Sonia Martínez-Girón has been researching at the International Team for the Study of Security Verona since 2021, where she is now working as Executive Director. At the same time, she is a PhD candidate at the Universidad Nebrija (Madrid), where she researches the relationship between food insecurity and terrorism in the Middle East. Sonia studied her master's degree in International Affairs at King's College London. Before that, she completed her Bachelor's degree in “Modern Languages, Culture and Communication” at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Sonia Martínez-Girón’s research combines her interest in food security issues with terrorism research and new security perspectives. She considers it important to include aspects of security that have traditionally been ignored and to apply them to combatting terrorism. As a member of ITSS Verona, she has been participating in the project on the exploitation of the cultural heritage of terrorists since 2023, in cooperation with UN CTED. Before that, she contributed to the project "Extremist Literature in Prison" on radicalisation within Spanish and German prisons. Currently, Sonia Martínez-Girón and her colleagues from ITSS Verona are developing a project to investigate water insecurity, terrorism and crime.
