Climate change, wars and conflicts: New study examines interrelations

Prof. Dr. Michael Brzoska

Michael Brzoska, IFSH Senior Research Fellow, is one of the authors of a new study on the consequences of climate change on armed conflict, in cooperation with colleagues from Melbourne University and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research. The study uses an innovative methodological approach linking statistical, qualitative comparative and case studies. The authors show that weather-related disasters increase the likelihood of armed conflict, albeit in a minor way and only under certain circumstances. The prime mechanisms for the link are changes in the opportunities for armed violence. The study has been published in the Journal Global Environmental Change.
