On November 30th, Johanna Polle presented new insights on “Drone Strikes, Cyber Attacks and all that Emerging Tech Jazz” at the Institute for Theology and Peace (ITHF) in Hamburg. In light of the tendency in the Social Sciences to summarize drones and cyber technologies under the “emerging technologies” label, she critically analyzed their conceptual and empirical similarities, differences as well as intersections. Although the technologies work differently, tend to have different targets and cause a different kind of damage, they do share a similar purpose – to deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct in order to harm the opponent.
