How will global warming affect global migration patterns? In large parts of the public and political discourse the answer to this question seems to be clear: climate change will lead to a massive increase of migration. In a recent comment published in Nature Climate Change a group of international scholars, including IFSH researcher Delf Rothe, deconstructs this dominant belief about climate-induced mass migration. A securitized approach to climate-migration could lead to dangerous policy-solutions – such as increasing border control. The researchers instead make the case for a “climate mobilities” lens – one that accounts for the complexities of climate change and migration linkages.
