Why Germany and France still have different views on security policy - New Policy Brief

Barbara Kunz contributed the article “Paris and Berlin: still no strategic convergence, while the big questions return” to the Security Policy Library of the Norwegian Atlantic Committee. She explains why Germany and France still do not reach a common understanding about politico-security considerations. Barbara Kunz observes different expectations towards joint military projects and underlines two kinds of threat perception of Germany and France. That is one of the reasons why both states´ attitudes are not consistent with each other until today. In the end of the paper, the author looks forward and gives an indication on how the next federal elections in Germany and the next presidential elections in France could influence the bilateral cooperation in the security area. Dr. Barbara Kunz works at the IFSH as a senior researcher on European security and defense affairs.
