Artificial intelligence is based on software technologies such as data and algorithms and is considered a key technology in many countries. It is associated with numerous promises, not only in economic terms, but also for use in the military sector. These are often visions and concrete applications are sometimes far from being ready for the market. But software technologies such as artificial intelligence are playing an increasingly important role both at the planning level and in the procurement of modern weapon systems.

In this research report, Sylvia Kühne presents the promises that key players associate with military capabilities and applications of artificial intelligence. The Research Report was written within the framework of the research project "Algorithms and Artificial Intelligence as Game Changer? Modern weapon systems between expectation and reality" which is founded by the German Foundation for Peace Research.
