On July 14, 2025, the IFSH, in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, hosted a panel discussion marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Helsinki Final Act.
The event on Monday evening with around 70 citizens participating at the Catholic Academy Hamburg focused on the continuing relevance of the Helsinki Process for today’s European security order. Participating in the discussion were PD Dr. Frank Sauer (University of the Bundeswehr Munich), Prof. Dr. Ursula Schröder (IFSH), Dr. habil. Cornelius Friesendorf (IFSH), and Sebastian Enskat, M.A. (Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Wien).
The panelists explored questions such as the future of European security institutions (particularly NATO, the EU, and the OSCE); differences between the Soviet Union in 1975 and today's Russia; and possibilities for military risk reduction within the framework of deterrence and defense against Russia.
