On 19 September 2022, the Enquete Commission „Lesson from Afghanistan for a future network engagement of Germany“ was constituted in the presence of Bundestag President Bärbel Bas.
While a parliamentary committee is to investigate the circumstances of the hasty withdrawal of the German Bundeswehr last August, the Enquete Commission will evaluate the mission in its entirety.
On behalf of the German Bundestag, the commission members will review and evaluate the twenty-year mission in the Hindu-Kush and make recommendations to policymakers for future German missions abroad. The Enquete Commission is a commission of inquiry consisting of parliamentary members and twelve external academic and professional experts. Hamburg, as a centre of sciences and research, is being represented by two renowned experts from the field of peace research and security policy: Prof. Dr Anna Geis, Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU), and Prof. Dr Ursula Schröder, Director of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH).
