Europe and the USA

Since the end of the Second World War, Europe and the USA have been close allies. This decades-long certainty was never in doubt, even during changes of power in the White House - until Donald Trump became US President again. Since January 2025, transatlantic relations have faced one of their most difficult tests. Trump has made it unmistakably clear that Europe can no longer rely unconditionally on the US as a military protecting power. Challenging times lie ahead for the continent.

Excluded from the Table? US-Russia Talks and the Future of Ukraine

The USA and Russia are talking about the future of Ukraine on their own and are excluding both the affected country itself, Ukraine, and Europe: What challenges arise from the new, surprising US-Russian alignment and how should we respond? Experts discussed these issues on 28 February at the invitation of the Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network (BSWN). IFSH Visiting Research Fellow Dr Valeriia Gergiieva moderated the event. All speakers expressed concerns about the current US strategy, the complexity of security guarantees for Ukraine and emphasised the importance of European cohesion and high defence investment.

The webinar occurred just before the Trump-Zelenskyy meeting at the White House.
